PUTRAJAYA, 25 Feb 2009: The Election Commission will be holding a special meeting on 4 March to discuss the date for a by-election for the Sarawak state assembly seat of Batang Ai.
A by-election has to be called following the death of assemblyperson Datuk Dublin Unting yesterday.
In KUCHING, the EC said it has received notice on the seat’s vacancy.
Sarawak EC director Takun Sunggah told Bernama that the notice, signed by Sarawak state assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar, was faxed to the EC headquarters in Putrajaya this morning.
Unting, who was Sarawak sports and agriculture assistant minister, died at the Normah Specialist Medical Center at 1.25am yesterday after suffering a stroke on 22 May 2008.
In the May 2006 state election, Unting defeated Nicholas Bawin Anggat of Sarawak National Party with an 806-vote majority. — Bernama
