BUKIT MERTAJAM, 26 Aug 2008: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed regret that he would not be able to take his oath as member of Parliament soonest possible.
This is because the third sitting in the first session of the 12th Parliament, which began on 18 Aug, would be adjourned on 29 Aug after the tabling of the 2009 Budget by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, due to the start of Ramadan. The sitting resumes in October after Hari Raya Puasa.
Addressing his supporters at the Tuanku Bainun Teacher Training Institute field here on 26 Aug, Anwar said his colleagues in Pakatan Rakyat, the opposition pact, had agreed to appoint him as opposition leader in the Dewan Rakyat immediately after taking his oath as member of Parliament.
Anwar will take over the role vacated by his wife and PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who was the opposition leader in Parliament before she resigned as Permatang Pauh MP on 31 July to make way for him to contest the seat in the by-election.
Meanwhile, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng thanked the people of Permatang Pauh for giving victory to Anwar.
"This is not only a win for Anwar but for all Malaysians who wish to see democracy flourish," he said. – Bernama
