KUALA LUMPUR, 2 Sept 2008: Syarikat Mengurus Air Banjir dan Terowong (Smart Sdn Bhd) and the National Service Training Department (JLKN) are among entities which will be asked to explain the reasons for their poor performance as highlighted in the 2007 Auditor-General’s Report.
Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid said the process would begin after Hari Ray Aidilfitri, next month.
He said apart from the two entities, the PAC would also be calling the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Education Ministry, Health Ministry, Defence Ministry, Home Ministry and Composites Technology Research Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
"This will enable them to explain the problems that they face so that it won’t recur in the future," he said after chairing the PAC meeting at the parliament house today.
Azmi said in 2007, the National Audit Department had audited a total of 123 federal government accounts, and of the total, 5% were found to have problems.
Azmi said even though the audit report had generally indicated an overall satisfactory performance, it was important that the government tackle the problems highlighted in the report.
"It is for this reason that we proposed that more internal auditors be appointed to enable the ministries, agencies and statutory bodies to solve problems at an early stage and prevent bigger losses," he said.
On Smart, Azmi said the company would be asked to explain why Sungai Batu, one of the rivers that contribute to the flood problems in the national capital, was not included in the stormwater management and road tunnel project.
PAC would also be calling Puspakom Sdn Bhd, which manages the computerised vehicle test centres in the country, following the bribery allegation involving several of its staff nationwide, he added. – Bernama
