PENANG, 17 Jan 2009: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng wants the Ministry of Transport to urgently consider the state’s proposal to build a Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT).
Lim, reiterated that building a LCCT in Penang was important to stimulate the economy, especially in the tourism sector.
“We have an ideal location for the purpose, just next to the Bayan Lepas International Airport. I had met and discussed the matter with Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Kiat in Parliament before,” Lim told reporters at his office here today.
Lim stressed that at a time when the economy was suffering due to a global economic meltdown, tourism, could be the sector that can contribute positively towards the revenue of the state.
Earlier Lim launched an Anti-Poverty Partner (RAK) scheme, an initiative by the state government and support from IJM Corporation Berhad, aimed at eradicating poverty in the state.
“As I have said before, I want Penang to become the first state to succeed in eliminating poverty level of the hardcore poor. To achieve that goal, I urge corporate bodies and individuals who have the capacity, to do their part in making the programme a success,” he said.— Bernama
