SHAH ALAM, 2 Sept 2008: Four men, believed to be members of the notorious Mamak Gang, were fatally shot by the police in front on a petrol station along the Federal Highway here at about 10.10am today.
Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said an action unit team from the state police headquarters rushed to the scene after receiving information on the presence of suspicious characters in two cars in the area.
He said on arrival at the scene, the team approached the two cars, a Proton Waja and a Proton Perdana, with six men inside. One of the men in the Proton Waja then fired three shots at the police.
"Police returned fire which ended with four of them dead at the scene, while two others, who were in the Proton Perdana, abandoned the car and fled," he told reporters at the scene.
Khalid said initial investigations revealed that the gang members were planning to rob the petrol kiosk owner.
"They were believed to be waiting for the petrol kiosk owner to go to the bank to deposit his daily collection," he added.
He said those shot were in their 30s and 40s and three of them were identified as T Murugan @ D Ravi Shanker, Asrab Ali Ahmad Kabir and D Logatharan.
They are believed to be members of the Mamak Gang and have previous records for, among others, robbery. They have also been detained at the Simpang Renggam detention centre.
Khalid said their modus operandus was similar to the Gang Mamak, which was to pose as policemen.
He said the Proton Waja car had a police logo sticker. A police vest and hand-cuff were also found in the car.
Also seized in the in incident were machetes, knives, a semi automatic pistol, 12 rounds of ammunition and a handphone. – Bernama
