A WHILE ago, a group of bloggers decided to express their dissatisfaction with the state of the nation by displaying the Jalur Gemilang upside down on their respective blog sites. This action predictably evoked various reactions from all over the country. Some people called them traitors and demanded that they be arrested and charged under the Sedition Act; even Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi waded into the controversy and labelled these bloggers as “evil”. Others, on the other hand, perceived this action as a way to demonstrate frustration towards the government, and voiced their support for these bloggers.
Whatever the case, with National Day on 31 Aug 2008 just round the corner, the city and its surroundings are festooned with flags of all sizes, hanging from the sides of many of the city’s landmark buildings. Rehearsals for the 51st Merdeka celebrations at Dataran Merdeka are also in full swing, but the fever hasn’t yet spread to the city folk who go about their daily business with nary a glance at the Jalur Gemilang displayed around them.
