KUALA LUMPUR, 25 March 2009: The Wanita, Youth and Puteri Umno movements convened their respective general assemblies at the Putra World Trade Centre this morning, with all eyes on the elections for the movements’ top posts.
The assemblies started with leaders of the three wings — Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Datuk Noraini Ahmad — delivering their respective keynote addresses in separate conference halls.
For the Wanita Umno chief post, Rafidah is being challenged by deputy chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil while the Umno Youth chief post is seeing a three-cornered fight involving Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo and Khairy Jamaluddin.
The Puteri Umno chief post is seeing a six-cornered fight between Datuk Shahaniza Shamsuddin, Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin, Datin Ismalina Ismail, Bibi Sharliza Mohd Khalid, Ida Rahayu Md Noor and Saarah Ali Bashah.
Apart from the chief posts, there are contests for the posts of vice-chiefs, executive council members and committee members of the three movements.
A total of 796 Wanita delegates, Youth (791) and Puteri (789) will cast their votes at their respective elections today.
Voting will be done manually and the results are expected to be known by 10pm tonight. — Bernama
