KUALA LUMPUR, 25 March 2009: The Private Higher Education Bill (Amended) 2008, which was passed by the Dewan Rakyat today, will allow students in private institutions of higher learning (IPTS) to be involved in party politics.
Deputy Higher Education Minister Dr Hou Kok Chung said the Private Higher Education Bill 1996 was amended to enable students to apply for permission to continue with their political activities during the duration of their study.
This would allow politicians from political parties to register as students in private institutions of higher learning, without them having to sacrifice their political career, he said when tabling the bill for the second reading in Parliament today.
When winding up the debate on the bill, Hou said the ministry had no objection to IPTS students’ involvement in politics so long as they do not go beyond the limit and that it would not adversely affect their studies. — Bernama
