PUTRAJAYA, 15 Sept 2008: Any change to the teaching of science and mathematics in English will only begin from Year One, said Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.
"Parents need not worry. There will not be any abrupt changes and if any, will begin from Year One. I too have children schooling in the current system (science and mathematics taught in English) and will get jittery if there are sudden changes," he told reporters after launching the book Malaysia: From Traditional to Smart Schools – The Malaysian Education Odyssey, here today.
Published by Oxford Fajar Sdn Bhd, the book traces the evolution of education in Malaysia post-Independence.
Hishammuddin added that a middle-of- the-road solution might be the best answer to the issue (teaching of science and mathematics in English) as the ministry did not want Malaysian students to be handicapped by a lack of English proficiency.
The ministry has been under pressure of late to revert to teaching the two subjects in Bahasa Malaysia. – Bernama
