KUALA LUMPUR, 18 Sept 2008: The Transport Ministry wants the multiple enforcement agencies under the various ministries to work with greater synergy to improve public transportation services, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.
"This area (enforcement) we need to synergise more. Currently we still lack a single line of command in enforcement.
"We are now having multiple agencies enforcing the laws, including the Road Transport Department (JPJ) under my ministry, The Royal Malaysian Police, Commercial Licensing Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP), local councils and others.
It’s time for us to rethink and strategise," he told reporters after delivering his keynote address at the National Summit On Urban Public Transport here today.
Ong said he had yet to see any effort addressing the enforcement issues apart from public transportation fare structure and the infrastructure for public transportation.
He said moving forward, the image of public transport should not be perpetuated to cater only for the less affluent but instead it should be judged as a better alternative to private vehicles. – Bernama
