KUALA LUMPUR, 18 Sept 2008: Four Umno members have been sacked from the party after they were found to have supported and joined the opposition in the last general election.
Umno President Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the party’s management committee had confirmed that one of them was from the Beluran Umno division in Sabah while the other three were from the Beaufort Umno division, also in Sabah.
"The letter will be sent to them," he told reporters after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting here today.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, when met by reporters after the meeting, said the four were sacked for contesting against Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates in the 12th general election.
Meanwhile, Abdullah said the meeting today also discussed the preparation in the event of a by-election in the Pensiangan parliamentary seat in Sabah.
Asked about the BN’s candidate for the by-election, Abdullah said, "Not just yet… we are going to appeal (against the court’s decision)."
On 8 Sept, the Kota Kinabalu High Court declared null and void the election of Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah president Tan Sri Joseph Kurup as the unopposed winner of the seat.
Asked whether the meeting had discussed former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s intention to rejoin Umno, Abdullah said, "It was not brought up."
Meanwhile Tengku Adnan, when asked on the matter, said Umno had yet to receive any application from Mahathir. – Bernama
