PETALING JAYA, 24 April 2009: Former Penang Deputy Chief Minister Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin has repeated that he wants to resign as Penanti state assemblyperson.
“I also declare my full support to the leadership of Parti Keadilan Rakyat spearheaded by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he said in a press statement today.
This announcement came hours after Penang State Assembly Speaker Abdul Halim Hussin said that Fairus could not retract his resignation as an assemblyperson.
Fairus also gave thanks to Allah for his “exoneration” by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) from any corrupt practices.
“The MACC’s announcement … is a manifestation of the truth which I have upheld all this while,” he said.
Fairus also said he has instructed his lawyers to take legal action against individuals, politicians and certain media outlets that have “embarrassed and slandered” him.
On 23 April, the MACC decided that statements recorded when investigating former Fairus did not provide the basis for prosecution.
The Election Commission will announce on 27 April whether there will be a by-election in Penanti.
