NEW DELHI, 13 May 2009: A young trader was detained after he was alleged to have hammered a nail into his pregnant wife’s head in what police suspect could be a dowry-related crime.
The incident happened in Hisar in the northern state of Rajasthan, where Joginder Singh, 27, along with his mother, had been harassing his wife, Vaishakhi, since they married a year ago.
“Before hammering the nail into her head, Joginder Singh branded Vaishakhi’s body with hot iron rods. He then abandoned her in Jhunjhunu (district),” reported the Times of India, quoting an unnamed police officer in Hisar.
The 24-year-old wife’s X-ray revealed a three-centimetre nail lodged in her head and she is now recuperating in a hospital in Jaipur.
According to the news report, Joginder Singh, abetted by his mother, would regularly abuse the victim demanding for more dowry.
Under interrogation, he told the police that he took his wife to Jhunjhunu for medical treatment as she was ill.
Vaishakhi had filed a police report against the husband, claiming that she was frequently harassed by her husband and mother-in-law for dowry.
“Before bringing me here, Joginder burnt my body with red-hot iron rods and hammered a nail in my head,” she said in her police report. — Bernama
