KUALA LUMPUR, 25 Sept 2008: Umno Vice-President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today he was not sure whether the party’s general assembly, scheduled for December, would be postponed to next year.
“I don’t really know about such a suggestion but this is an important matter. I won’t be able to comment any further at the moment,” he said when asked on talks that Umno leaders were considering postponing the general assembly to June next year.
The general assembly would see elections for top party posts as well as those of the Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings.
Muhyiddin also rejected the notion that the party was experiencing a power struggle that is in danger of weakening it.
He also said that the leadership transition between Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and deputy Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, scheduled for June 2010, was expected to take place smoothly.
He said the Umno supreme council meeting, at its recent meeting, decided to leave it to Abdullah and Najib to determine the date for the transfer of power.
On the contest for the party’s highest post, Muhyiddin said as a party which practice democracy, all party posts could be contested.
Asked whether he would go for either the president’s or the deputy president’s post should he received sufficient nominations, Muhyiddin said: “I will announce when the time comes. It’s too early for me to say which post I’m going to contest.”
Muhyiddin had previously announced his intention to defend the vice-president’s post. — Bernama
