PENANG, 11 June 2009: Jawi assemblyperson Tan Beng Huat has submitted an undated resignation letter to party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng on the instruction of the state DAP.
State DAP chairperson Chow Kon Yeow said he was instructed by Lim to request an undated resignation letter as state assemblyperson from Tan to show that the Penang government practised the Competency, Transparency and Accountability (CAT) concept.
“We requested the undated resignation letter to show that we mean to be transparent, and Tan has also submitted the letter to the party,” he told reporters at the state DAP headquarters here today.
Yesterday, Tan was accused by Nibong Tebal DAP division chief Teh Hock Yong of misappropriating funds in the form of sponsorship of a local charity organisation.
However, Tan, denied the claim and said he hoped that the party would investigate the matter fairly to clear his name.
“I am more than happy to submit the undated resignation letter to the party leadership, as the party has the right to act against corruption,” he said.
Tan said he would leave it to the party decide on his fate and was considering legal action against Teh.
Meanwhile, Lim said he had directed the state financial officer, Farizan Darus, to investigate the matter, and stern action would be taken if there was wrongdoing.
Teh also reportedly alleged that the equipment supplied by Tan for the sponsorship was only worth about RM450, but Tan had submitted a claim for RM2,000 to the district office.
The matter has been reported to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). — Bernama
