JASIN, 24 July 2009: Thirty-nine new Influenza A(H1N1) cases were reported nationwide, all of which are local transmissions, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.
He said 36 were cluster cases which occurred in institutions of higher learning and schools, while three were sporadic cases.
There are 978 H1N1 cases in the country so far. Of the total, only 20 patients are still receiving treatment in hospitals, he said.
“No new deaths recorded after the death of an Indonesian H1N1 patient on Tuesday due to cardiac arrest. The death is not directly related to H1N1,” he told reporters after opening the Merlimau Health Clinic here today.
In Malacca, seven institutions of higher learning were closed after 70 students were infected with the virus, nine of whom are still being treated at the Malacca Hospital, he said.
The Mara Skills Institute in Jasin is the latest institution to be closed, for a week from today, due to the pandemic.
The other institutions are the Malacca Malay Women Teachers’ Training Institute, Malacca Foundation College, Mara Professional College, Nilam Nursing School, Universiti Teknologi Mara campus in Lendu, and Institut Kota, involving over 10,000 students. — Bernama
