KUALA LUMPUR, 2 Oct 2008: Gerakan central committee member and Youth vice-chairman Huan Cheng Guan today announced that he would contest the vice-president’s post in the party’s elections scheduled for 11 Oct.
“I am offering myself as a candidate for the vice-president’s post in the coming Gerakan’s annual general meeting. Gerakan is now at the lowest ebbs and it needs changes to rejuvenate the party,” he said.
“Gerakan also needs leaders with political will and brave enough to speak out. I urge the delegate to come out in full force and vote for change in Gerakan,” he said in a statement here.
Gerakan’s incumbent vice-presidents are Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nam, Datuk Dr S Vijayaratnam and Datuk Chang Ko Youn.
Huan, a former Batu Kawan member of parliament, had also offered to contest the Penang Gerakan chairman’s post on Sept 21 but withdrew at the last minute.
The nomination for the Gerakan’s national positions would be conducted on 4 Oct while the elections would be on Oct 11. — Bernama
