PETALING JAYA, 6 Aug 2009: Former Selangor MIC Youth chief P Subramaniam will contest for the vice-presidency in the upcoming MIC election on 22 Sept.
Subramaniam, who announced his candidacy here today, said he had decided to do so after he received grassroots support voicing their concern and wanting more young blood injected into the party in line with its rejuvenation efforts.
He was also confident that with 26 years’ experience in politics, and his understanding of the MIC and the struggles of Indian Malaysians, he would be able to work with the leadership and bring changes to the community.
“The time for young leaders has come, and I believe that president Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu will need a team of leaders who can work tirelessly to serve and unite the community,” he said at a news conference.
Samy Vellu had endorsed three candidates — Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S Subramaniam, Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk M Saravan, and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk SK Devamany — for the post.
Two more candidates, SK Bala of Johor and V Ragu Moorthy from Selangor, are expected to join in the race.
When asked about his chances in contesting against Samy Vellu’s endorsed candidates, P Subramaniam said, “The community needs leaders who are vocal, independent and knowledgeable … who are able to work for the betterment of the community, and to revamp the party and unite Indian [Malaysians].”
On whether his decision to contest would get approval from the president, he said, “[Samy Vellu] has not said that he supports [me]; nor has he stopped me from contesting. So I am taking this as a blessing from him for me to go ahead.” — Bernama
