KUALA LUMPUR, 3 Oct 2008: The Gerakan national delegates conference, scheduled for 11 to 12 Oct, will not table any resolution pertaining to the party’s fate in the Barisan Nasional (BN), Gerakan secretary-general Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye said today.
“Until today, we have not received any proposal for such a resolution on this issue from any state,” he told a news conference at the Gerakan headquarters here.
Over the last few months, there had been murmurs on the ground that the party, which suffered a major defeat at the general election on 8 March 2008, including losing the Penang government, should pull out of the BN.
The national delegates conference will witness the tabling of five resolutions — on human rights, politics, the economy, the party’s internal affairs and education — to be debated by the delegates.
“The first day of the conference will see the election of the national leaders and the debate on the presidential address while the second day will be to debate the five resolutions,” Chia said.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will open the conference after the presidential address by acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.
A total of 2,081 national delegates are eligible to attend and vote at the delegates conference.
All top party posts, for the president, deputy president, three vice-presidents and 18 central committee members, will be contested.
On another matter, Chia said that although he had announced he would not contest any national position at the Gerakan polls, he would contribute to the party “in a different capacity”.
Last week, Chia, who was seen as a potential deputy president, dropped a bombshell when he announced that he would not go for any national position in the party. — Bernama
