KUALA LUMPUR, 29 Oct 2009: The government is in the second stage of studying the implementation of tolled highways, covering issues like financial model analysis, performance of concessionaires, traffic projection, and the impact of tolled highways on development along their corridors.
“The study will also look at ensuring that any move to be taken by the government can be implemented with minimum financial implication and without affecting market sentiment, long-term investment, as well as the confidence of local and foreign investors,” Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop said.
Nor Mohamed said this in a written reply to Tan Kok Wai (DAP-Cheras) and Lim Lip Eng (DAP-Segambut), who asked the prime minister to update the House on the takeover of highways and the status of the Economic Planning Unit’s proposal pertaining to tolled highways.
Nor Mohamed said a comprehensive study was important in finding the best solution for all.
A private entity, Asas Serba Sdn Bhd, was reported to have submitted a proposal to the works minister to acquire all 22 highway concessions for RM50 billion. The company is said to be backed by four businesspersons, including a former PLUS high-ranking officer. — Bernama
