KUALA TERENGGANU, 9 Oct 2008: Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri, who is Bera Umno division chief, has offered to contest a seat in the Umno supreme council in the party elections in March.
He said the decision was made to enable him, if elected, to raise the concerns of the young generation, who made up 46 per cent of the country’s population, to the party’s supreme council.
He added that with about 200,000 youths registered as voters every year, it was important that their voice be heard.
“I’m offering myself to contest an Umno supreme council seat, if there’s nomination and support for me,” he told reporters after presenting aid to youth associations here last night.
In SEREMBAN, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Hasan Malek announced his desire to contest for an Umno supreme council seat in the coming party elections.
He said the decision was made after considering the encouragement and support from the Felda community and members of the Malaysian Youth Council, which he once helmed.
“(If elected) My presence in the Umno supreme council serves as a bridge to link the Felda community with the party and the government,” he said in a statement today.
Hasan, 62, is Kuala Pilah Member of Parliament and also the Kuala Pilah Umno deputy chief. — Bernama
