KUALA LUMPUR, 12 Nov 2009: MCA leaders have been reminded that the prolonged leadership crisis can lead to the party’s suspension, former secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan said.
Ong said MCA leaders should learn from what happened to Umno, which had its registration suspended in 1988 following bitter in-fighting.
“Failure to find an amicable solution may affect the people’s confidence in the MCA. We have to be careful as the MCA could face a technical problem like Umno.
“The problem started when the (10 Oct 2009) EGM decision was not respected. This led to two deputy presidents. It can spin out of control and become a technical problem,” he told a press conference at Parliament lobby today.
Ong, who is also Tapah MCA division chief, said intervention by the Registrar of Societies had tarnished the party’s image and showed that MCA leaders were incapable of resolving the crisis.
He supported the central committee decision to hold another extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on 28 Nov to pave the way for new elections.
“Returning power to the 2,380 party delegates is the best way to resolve the crisis,” he added. — Bernama
