GERAKAN’s 37th National Delegates Conference took off with two main issues: the need to return to its roots as a multi-racial party and the dilemma of whether or not to remain in the Barisan Nasional.
In this conference, held from 10 to 12 Oct 2008 at Menara PGRM in Kuala Lumpur, a record 10 candidates vied for three vice-presidential seats, while another 40 candidates contested for 18 central committee members’ posts.
The keen contest may well be a sign that the fighting spirit is back among party grassroots. After the party’s dismal performance in the 8 March general election, this shows that the membership is responding to calls to revive Gerakan’s founding ideals and make the party relevant to Malaysians again.
