Past Contributors - The Nut Graph


	Datuk Abu Bakar Jaafar is a mechanical engineer by profession, environmental scientist by specialisation, and maritime expert by current pre-occupation. He believes not many have spoken up enough for Mother Earth and for our common good and that it is high time to speak up again. He was director-general of the Department of Environment, Malaysia from 1990 to 1995.

	Ahmad Hafidz Baharom is a paradox. He’s an anti-smoking chain smoker, an environmentalist who leaves his office lights on, a centrist who’s a lalang, and a twentysomething yuppie who dreams of being a slacker. He’s a lovable moron whose column, Scraping the Bottom of the Barrel, appears in Big Picture.

	Aloysious Mowe, SJ is an International Visiting Fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center, Georgetown University, Washington, DC. He is a Jesuit priest with an academic interest in Islamic law and history. His column For Heaven’s Sake appears in Big Picture.

	Amir Muhammad is a writer, publisher and movie-maker who lives in Damansara, which is more a state of mind than geography. Amir’s Alphabet will have 26 parts but will not be presented in order, as he was never a fan of the concept (or even the Malay boyband) called “A to Z”. But it promises to not mention a single politician, and can be found in Living Culture.



	A feature writer and photographer since 1999 with Men’s Review, theSun, The Edge and Off The Edge, Danny Lim is an award-winning photographer and documentary-maker who has also contributed writing and photography to local and international media including MalaysiaVotes, The Malaysian Insider, Malaysiakini and Far Eastern Economic Review. In 2007, he won an award for feature photography from the Society of Publishers in Asia. Danny covered the 2008 Permatang Pauh by-election, and is covering the January 2009 Kuala Terengganu by-election, for this site.

	Fahmi Fadzil is a performer and writer. He is a member of arts collective Five Arts Centre, a coordinator of Projek Wayang, and helps run graphic design studio Bright Lights At Midnight. His translations of reports from the Malay press in the earlier days of The Nut Graph can be read in the archives of Found in Translation.

	Fared Ayam adalah teruna berleher jinjang yang sentiasa penuh dengan cinta dan kemarahan tetapi seringkali gagal dalam percintaan. 	Kathy Rowland is the co-founder of www.kakiseni.com. She has been involved in arts advocacy and freedom of expression in the arts for over 15 years. Her articles on the politics of culture have appeared in publications in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. A native of Petaling Jaya, Kathy is currently based in Miami. 	Trained as a linguist, Leong Lai Ming is now working for a local social research firm. She believes everybody has a place in the world. She translates news from the Chinese media for the weekly Found in Translation.


	Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj is a physician by training and a founding member of Parti Sosialis Malaysia. He is currently Member of Parliament for Sungai Siput. His column, Sungai Siput, can be found in Realpolitiker.

	Rohana Ariffin dilatih dalam bidang sosiologi dan telah berkhidmat selama lebih dua dekad di Universiti Sains Malaysia, Pulau Pinang. Dia bersyarah dalam bidang perhubungan industri dan kajian gender. Dalam jangkamasa yang sama, dia juga menyumbang kepada pelbagai pertubuhan bukan kerajaan dan kesatuan sekerja. Dia menjadi ahli biasa Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) pada tahun 1970, sejurus selepas tamat pengajian di Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Kini, dia menyandang jawatan naib presiden PRM. 	Sevan Doraisamy was one of the pioneer journalists of RadiqRadio.com from 2000 to 2003. He has been involved in socio-political issues since 2000 and is active in both local and national non-governmental organisations. In the earlier days of The Nut Graph, he translated the news on a weekly basis from the Tamil press for Found in Translation.

	Sharmila Valli Narayanan started her career as a teacher in Gelang Patah, once an idyllic rural town in Johor. After one year, eight months and six days, she had enough and fled to KL, where she found herself, and a couple of other people too, in Her World magazine. After 11 glorious years there, she is currently a freelance writer and part-time lecturer. She has written for all the top women’s magazines in Malaysia and also writes the profiles column for Malaysian Business. Her dream is to live in country where the summers are not above 26°C and winters not below 10°C, and where the public transport runs like clockwork. Sharmila translates the news from the Tamil press for Found in Translation.

	Before becoming an art director for several companies, Shieko was a visualiser for international advertising agencies where she drew storyboards, made fun of evil bosses, and designed birthday and farewell cards for colleagues. Out of boredom, she started visualising on public walls, and her talent has resulted in commissioned work by, among others, Nike, Adidas and Toyota. Shieko draws for food, fun and for the sake of it, and occasionally for The Nut Graph.

	Sim Kwang Yang was the DAP MP for Bandar Kuching for three terms from 1982 to 1995, after which he retired from active politics due to poor health. He was a columnist for the Chinese language Sin Chew Daily and Nanyang Siang Pao in the 1980s and 1990s. From 2002 onwards, he has been a columnist for the net portal Malaysiakini.com. 	Bekas pelajar Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Seremban, Suraya Yaacob ialah ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri untuk kawasan Sungai Tiang, Kedah dari parti Umno. 	Tony Pua is Member of Parliament for Petaling Jaya Utara under the Democratic Action Party (DAP). He is also the DAP national publicity secretary, as well as the investment liaison officer for the Penang Chief Minister, based in the Klang Valley. Before joining politics full-time in January 2007, Tony was the CEO and founder of a Malaysian IT company, publicly listed in Singapore. He divested all his shares in the company to be able to serve the community and take part in socio-political affairs of Malaysia. His column, Tanahairku, appears in Realpolitiker.

	Tricia Yeoh is proud to be Malaysian, and believes in a nation that recognises and provides for equitable opportunity to all. She thinks that common values can be worked out peaceably so we can share spaces together. Her column Egalitaria is found in Big Picture.


	Yasmin Masidi was born feet first, and she hasn’t stopped running since. She likes to think of the disparate elements of herself — a feminist, a bibliophile, an activist, a hostile pedestrian, a football fan — as facets of a single gem. Born and raised in Sabah, she currently works for an international non-governmental organisation based in Kuala Lumpur. She believes in equality, non-discrimination, and humanity’s ability to survive despite itself. Her column, Strange Fruit, can be found in Big Picture.
