KUALA LUMPUR, 24 Oct 2008: The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) will investigate the demolition of houses in Kampung Baru Plentong Tengah in Johor Baru on 16 Oct.
Suhakam commissioner, Datuk Khalid Ibrahim, said the commission will meet on 29 Oct to discuss in detail the allegation by the Johor Baru representative of Suaram, a human rights outfit, that there was police brutality during the incident.
“There are several issues raised by Suaram Johor Baru today in relation to the incident and we will study it in detail before taking the matter to the commission meeting level,” Khalid said.
He was speaking to reporters after receiving a memorandum from the representative at the commission’s office today.
On 16 Oct, 25 residents of Kampung Baru Plentong Tengah were detained by police for obstructing civil servants from carrying out the demolition.— Bernama
