A gift for my wife, says Zahid

March 27, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, 27 March 2009: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said his winning an Umno vice president’s post today was a wonderful gift for his wife as it coincided with their 31st wedding anniversary.

“I think my duty is to strengthen the party, assist the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, and cooperate with my vice-president friends and also the members of Umno’s supreme council (MT) in ensuring Umno continues to remain relevant with all Malaysians particularly at the rural grassroots level,” he said when met after Umno’s polls results for the next term were announced at the Putra World Trade Centre here tonight.

Besides Ahmad Zahid, Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal won the other two posts.

Asked about preparations for the Bukit Gantang parliamentary election on 7 April, Ahmad Zahid said:”As the Perak deputy Umno chief at the moment, it is my responsibility to ensure a Barisan Nasional (BN) win because we see it as having just loaned the seat to PAS the last 11 months and now want to get it back.”

Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid’s wife Datin Seri Hamidah Khamis described her husband winning the seat on their wedding anniversary as a wonderful gift for her and family.

“I view his victory as a responsibility in continuing with the vision of former Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for the party in the interest of religion, race and country,” she said.— Bernama
