BUKIT MERTAJAM, 23 May 2009: Police reminded all candidates for the by-election for the Penanti state seat and their supporters to ensure that the various activities and ceramah carried out during the campaign period adhered to the regulations and law specified.
Media Relations officer for the by-election, Supt Shaharon Anuar Abdul Latif said they were urged not to make slanderous statements against each other or against other groups during their campaigns, or when putting up posters or distributing pamphlets.
“Actions that are provocative in nature or jeopardise public order or humiliate others are also prohibited,” he said in a press statement issued here.
He said action could be taken against anyone found to commit such acts under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 105 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
He said the cooperation of all parties was vital in ensuring that the by-election went peacefully and free from crime or chaos.
Polling day is set for 31 May. — Bernama
