PENANG, 31 July 2009: The Election Commission (EC) is expected to announce the nomination and polling dates for the Permatang Pasir state by-election by 10 Aug, EC chairperson Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said.
The by-election, the eighth since the March 2008 general election, has to be called because of the death of the incumbent, Datuk Mohd Hamdan Abdul Rahman.
The EC expects to receive the notice on the seat vacancy from the Penang state assembly speaker, Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain, by Monday.
The EC will then meet to discuss the nomination and polling dates, Abdul Aziz told Bernama today.
Meanwhile, Abdul Halim said he was waiting for the death certificate before sending the notice of vacancy to the Penang EC.
He said the state assembly would sit for five days from 10 Aug, adding that Mohd Hamdan had submitted several written questions for the sitting. — Bernama
