KUALA LUMPUR, 3 Dec 2008: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today welcomed into the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim who was sacked from Umno yesterday.
Anwar, who is Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor, said PR was comfortable with the principles of Zaid whom he described as being stern in opposing laws said to be contrary to human rights, including the Internal Security Act (ISA).
“We welcome him. It’s his choice to discuss with PKR, DAP and PAS leaders. We are comfortable because we have seen him steadfast in defending the principles of human rights and being very committed in his position and stand against the ISA,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby.
Zaid was sacked from Umno yesterday for having attended events organised by several opposition parties.
He had resigned as a minister on 17 Sept after he disagreed with the government’s use of the ISA in detaining a journalist, a blogger and a DAP Member of Parliament. — Bernama
