KUALA TERENGGANU, 13 Jan 2009: Police foiled an attempt by about 30 supporters of an opposition party to hold an illegal rally in Jalan Bukit Kecil here last night.
Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan, however, said no arrests were made on the individuals concerned who were attempting to canvass for votes in the Kuala Terengganu by-election by going door-to-door along the street and the adjacent Jalan Hiliran.
“It’s not that the police want to discourage campaigning but its better done in smaller groups preferably less than five persons in order not to disturb the peace,” he told Bernama today.
He also reminded election campaigners from outside Terengganu to respect the local culture to avoid untoward incidents.
Polling is on 17 Jan.
