BN MPs should support caucus, says Nazri

By Elizabeth Looi

November 13, 2008

KUALA LUMPUR, 13 Nov 2008: De facto law minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz wants Barisan Nasional (BN) members of parliament (MPs) to support the integrity and independence of the judiciary parliamentary caucus set up by the opposition.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, who is also in charge of parliament affairs, said integrity is something that the BN government had been promoting.

“I hope more BN MPs will participate, just to promote integrity. This is not an opposition caucus.

“If parliament wants to make integrity as one of the core issues, then we should take part,” he told The Nut Graph in the parliament lobby.

Earlier, Nazri was the only BN representative at the launch of the caucus that was chaired by DAP MP for Bukit Gelugor Karpal Singh.

Among those present were Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Parti Keadilan Rakyat MP for Subang R Sivarasa, DAP MP for Ipoh Barat M Kulasegaran and DAP MP for Batu Gajah Fong Po Kuan.

On the caucus, Karpal said they would push for the proposed Judicial Appointments Commission to include the promotion of judges.

“The commission must include the promotion of judges, otherwise we will have cases like Tan Sri Zaki Azmi, who was promoted to be the Chief Justice in less than a year,” he told reporters.
