Chew Mei Fun wins MCA Wanita Chief post

October 13, 2008

KUALA LUMPUR, 13 Oct 2008: Selangor Wanita MCA head Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun today won the Wanita MCA chief post uncontested at the close of the MCA national, youth and wanita election nominations at the party headquarters at Wisma MCA here.

There were no other candidates for the Wanita chief post when nominations closed at 5pm.

The Wanita deputy chief post was also won uncontested by Datuk Yu Chok Tow, the former secretary-general of the wing.

The same went for the four Wanita MCA vice-chairman seats, which were won by by Agnes Shim, Datuk Christina Lim Bee Kau, Datuk Lee Pit Chern and Tan Ah Eng.

The MCA wanita chief post became vacant after incumbent Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen decided not to seek re-election as she was contesting the party vice-presidency.

Speaking to reporters after the nomination process, Chew said Wanita MCA would carry out reforms in the wing to clear misconceptions among its members that Wanita MCA was only concerned about women and family matters or issues.

“We want to be the people’s politicians.  Apart from giving importance to issues concerning women and family matters, we would also like to expand our scope to politics, education and economy,” said the 44-year-old politician.

In the 8 March general election, Chew lost the Petaling Jaya Utara parliamentary seat to Pua Kiam Wee of the DAP.

On attracting more younger women to join MCA, Chew, the former Women, Family and Community Development parliamentary secretary, said she will now identify more eligible and talented ‘beliawanis’ to join MCA.

“I have a plan now where I will get all the biodatas of the potential beliawanis and will scrutinise their background carefully before allowing them to come into the MCA and hold positions in the Wanita,” she added.

Meanwhile, there are 25 aspirants for the 23 Central Committee Wanita seats. The Wanita will hold their election on 17 Oct.

The candidates are Lai Poey Yee, Chai Yat Chiew, Chiew Hong Lan, Ong Siew Giok, Chong Sou Chan, Chang Seok Sin, Tan Boon Kiat, Liau Ah Keng, Chua Fong Ling, Tan Tok Kee, Lee Geoh Lan, Gan Soo Bing, Ivy See Ngah Kee, Wong Pik Min, Goh Hui Peng, Chong Saw Fen, Lim Kim Eng, Yap Yim Ming, Lim Kee Moi, Tan Choo Kuan, Saw Ooi Leng, Leong Siew Kam, Chong Mui, Goh Swee Gim and Chan Lea See. — Bernama
