MALACCA, 2 Feb 2009: Police constable Mohd Fairus Shafie who was in a coma for over two months after an assault by a group of men near here died in Kota Tinggi, Johor last night.
Malaaca police chief Datuk Mazlan Mansor said Mohd Fairus of Malacca CID died at 9pm in Kota Tinggi Hospital.
He said Mohd Fairus, 23, who served Malacca police for just over one year was a committed police constable.
Mohd Fairus, a bachelor, was transferred from Malacca Hospital to Kota Tinggi Hospital in December to be close to family members in Sungai Mas Felda scheme.
The Malacca state government had donated RM10,000 to his family. It was presented by State Welfare, Unity and Youth Committee chairperson Datuk Ab Karim Sulaiman in Sungai Mas Felda today.
Eight people were charged with four others still at large in the Sessions Court here on 5 Dec for causing grievious hurt to Mohd Fairus on 21 Nov last year.
They are alleged to have assaulted Mohd Fairus with crash helmets in front of Subaidah Nasi Kandar Restaurant in Ayer Keroh at 11.05pm.
The eight aged 18-42 pleaded not guilty to the charge. Hearing has been fixed for 27-28 April and 11-12 May. — Bernama
