KUALA LUMPUR, 13 Jan 2009: The High Court has fixed 14 April for a re-mention of the defamation suit brought by the late Tan Sri Eric Chia against DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
Justice Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail set the date here today to hear from the plaintiff’s lawyer whether the suit would proceed since Chia, former Perwaja Terengganu Sdn Bhd managing director, had died on 24 June last year.
Chia filed the suit on 2 Jan 2002, claiming that Lim had pictured him as a corrupt and not qualified to serve the company in a report entitled First Report On Financial Malpractices, Abuse Of Power, Corruption And Fraud In Perwaja Terengganu Sdn Bhd (Perwaja) lodged at the Sentul police station on 11 April 1996.
Chia who was then represented by counsel from Messrs Jega Kumar, had said the report had severely damaged his reputation as a well-known businessman and sought general and aggravated damages and other reliefs deemed fit by the court.
Lim whose lawyers were from Messrs Karpal Singh filed his defence on 1 March 2002. — Bernama
