PENANG, 24 March 2009: Former Penang Deputy Chief Minister I, Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin, whose resignation is effective beginning 8 April, has been asked to prove his allegation of an internal conspiracy to bring about his downfall.
Denying the allegation, Penang Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) liaison committee chairperson, Datuk Zahrain Mohamed Hashim, said Mohammad Fairus, also from PKR, stepped down for personal reasons.
“If there was a conspiracy, ask him to provide the facts and proof,” Zahrain told reporters after chairing a four-hour liaison committee meeting here yesterday.
Asked about reports that the state Domestic Trade, Consumer Affairs and Religious Affairs Committee chairperson, Abdul Malik Abul Kassim, also of PKR, was ready to take over the deputy chief minister’s post, Zahrain said no discussion had been held about a replacement.
He said the meeting last night was only on the party’s preparations for the Bukit Selambau by-election on 7 April. — Bernama
