KUALA LUMPUR, 14 May 2009: The government must find the root cause of the mat rempit (illegal motorcycle racers) problem to find an enduring solution, Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) chairperson Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said today.
“Is it because they come from broken homes and lack parental counselling? Or is it because they do not have proper places to relax and release their energies or tension,” he said.
He said that if the latter was true, the government needed to provide more sports facilities and more recreational spaces for the youth.
“We need more football fields, more badminton and basketball courts, more affordable sport amenities for the young. There should be more spaces for games and sports in our cities and towns,” he said in a statement here.
Lee also urged the Housing and Local Government Ministry as well as the respective state governments to ensure that all the local authorities provide adequate sports amenities in cities, towns and districts.
Besides that, parents must discipline and guide their children, he added. — Bernama
