KUALA TERENGGANU, 29 Dec 2008: Gerakan will use the internet and telephones to reach out to voters in the 17 Jan 2009 Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election.
The party’s secretary-general, Teng Chang Yeow, said although Gerakan did not have any seats in the state’s legislative assembly, the party wanted to help the Barisan Nasional (BN) win over voters.
“In this by-election, Gerakan has been given the task of taking care of the Paya Bunga voting area.
“We are identifying voters in Paya Bunga and will approach them using telephones and the internet as that is a very efficient way to provide information about the BN,” Teng said after a meeting here today with state Gerakan members.
He said according to previous records, there were 2,516 registered voters in the area but the party was determining the actual number.
He said there were also planned programmes to get closer to the voters, especially the Chinese Malaysians.
“We will work together with the other BN component members and 200 Gerakan members from around the country will help in the campaigning,” Teng said.
He said these party members were experienced in previous elections and would explain national issues that would be raised in the run-up to the by-election. — Bernama
