SHAH ALAM, 8 May 2009: The impending release of the Hindu Rights Action Front (Hindraf) trio from Internal Security Act (ISA) in Kamunting was joyously received by their wives.
Kota Alam Shah assemblyperson M Manoharan’s wife thanked the government for its decision to release him and 12 other ISA detainees within the next few days.
S Pushpaneela said this showed that the government was concerned over her plight and that of her children.
The release of 13 ISA detainees, including three Hindraf leaders, Manoharan, P Uthayakumar, and K Vasantha was announced by Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein today.
Pushpaneela expressed her appreciation for the support given by leaders and the people to her family.
“I hope the release of my husband will give our family a new hope,” she said when contacted.
Asked whether Manoharan would opt to stay on as Kota Alam Shah assemblyperson upon his release, Pushpaneela said that was a matter for him to decide upon his release.
Manoharan, who won the seat while under ISA detention, had stated that he would most likely resign on 19 May as he was not free yet to serve his constituents.
Uthayakumar’s wife, S.Indra Devi, who was overjoyed with the news, said, “I’m visiting him at the camp tomorrow as tomorrow is a visiting day. I hope we can go home together on Sunday,” she said.
Indra Devi thanked Makkal Sakhti for supporting the family during her husband’s detention and a team of lawyers who had fought for his release. — Bernama
