KUALA LUMPUR, 17 Nov 2008: Human Resource Ministry secretary-general Datuk Thomas George will chair the special committee set up to monitor the employment market and assist workers who may get retrenched due to the global economic crisis.
Human Resource Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said today the committee, which would comprise representatives of employers, trade unions, ministries and relevant government agencies, would meet monthly.
The committee would also produce a guidebook on The Management of Workers’ Retrenchment next month to inform employers and workers on the retrenchment procedure and what measures they should take, he told reporters.
Earlier, Subramaniam held a three-hour meeting with representatives of unions and the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) to discuss the issue.
He said another committee, to help retrenched workers in terms of welfare, had been set up to retrain and rehabilitate workers.
This was in addition to the RM5-million allocation to provide re-training for retrenched workers under the Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad (PSMB), he added. — Bernama
