KUALA TERENGGANU, 18 Dec 2008: Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz said today that as Wanita Umno chief, she will lead the movement’s campaign in the Kuala Terengganu by-election on 17 Jan.
She said this should not be an issue because she had been leading the movement in all the previous by-elections except for the Permatang Pauh by-election when she had to leave the task to others because she had just undergone a knee surgery.
“As Wanita Umno chief, I have led the movement’s campaign in all by-elections except for the Permatang Pauh’s where I asked the Wanita Umno Executive Secretary to represent me. It’s always like that.
“This time around, I’m okay. I’m glad to be able to come here and share the spirit with all the Wanita Umno members,” she told reporters at after meeting the constituents of Kuala Terengganu here.
Wanita Umno vice-chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil was reported yesterday to have shrugged when asked why Rafidah was taking charge of Wanita Umno’s campaign in the by-election, claiming she did not have a clue.
Rafidah said she had plenty of time to help in the campaign as she did not hold any position in the government and added that this was her fourth trip here.
Asked about the apparent lack of coordination between her and Shahrizat, Rafidah said: “I don’t know. Everybody is here. I have asked everybody to come. All Wanita Umno heads are also invited to another event later today.”
She said Wanita Umno and Wanita BN were ready to garner support from the women, who numbered 40,489 or half of the 80,229 registered voters in Kuala Terengganu, to ensure victory for the BN candidate. — Bernama
