KUALA LUMPUR, 27 March 2009: Newly-elected Umno president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he would always remain loyal to incoming president Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and assist him in spearheading the party and the country.
Muhyiddin, who garnered 1,575 votes, to beat Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib, who polled 916 votes, described his victory as a heavy responsibility entrusted upon him and he would shoulder it with utmost sincerity and honesty.
“I will assist the president in strengthening Umno and get party leaders and members to close ranks,” he told reporters after the results of the Umno supreme council elections were announced at the Putra World Trade Centre here tonight.
“I will carry out my duty and responsibility to the best of my ability,” he said while thanking his colleagues and the people for praying for his victory.
Muhyiddin, who is also Pagoh Umno division head, said the delegates had shown their maturity in choosing a cohesive line-up.
Describing the contest as a family affair, he said the candidates, who lost in the elections, had a role to play in restoring Umno.— Bernama
