KUALA LUMPUR, 16 March 2009: DAP chairperson Karpal Singh is expected to be charged at the Sessions Court in Jalan Duta here tomorrow, under the Sedition Act.
His son, Ram Karpal Singh, confirmed that his father had received a notice to present himself at 9am, to face charges under the Act.
“We were informed that it was under the Sedition Act 1948 but we do not know which section…normally, it is under Section 4,” he said.
It is believed the sedition charges are related to comments made by Karpal, who is the Member of Parliament for Bukit Gelugor, over Perak’s Sultan Azlan Shah’s decision to dismiss Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin as menteri besar.
Karpal had threatened to take legal action against the sultan, a move that came under heated criticism from certain quarters. He later backed down from his threat. — Bernama
