ALOR SETAR, 14 Jan 2009: Kedah has reverted the spelling of its capital to “Alor Setar” effective today.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said the change was made following the local authority’s request.
“The State Executive Council meeting at Wisma Darul Aman here today approved the spelling change,” he told reporters after chairing the meeting.
Alor Setar was changed to “Alor Star” when Datuk Seri Syed Razak Syed Zain was the Kedah menteri besar in the late 1990s.
Azizan said the State Executive Council agreed to return to the original spelling after the “setar” tree and the change would not involve a big cost.
He said State Secretary Datuk Wira Syed Unan Mashri Syed Abdullah would soon issue a directive to all local authorities and government departments to use the original spelling of the capital in all official business.
The Public Works Department would also be instructed to change the signboards, he said. — Bernama
