Kelantan agrees to observe 16 Sept as a public holiday

September 2, 2008

KOTA BARU, 2 Sept 2008: Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said the state governmment was in favour of the proposal to declare 16 Sept, the date of Malaysia’s formation, as a public holiday.

He said the suggestion should be accepted and implemented by all the Pakatan Rakyat states – Kelantan, Perak, Kedah, Selangor and Penang.

"I can accept (and) if the other four states can also accept, it will be better," he told reporters after launching the state-level Integrity Day here today.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has proposed that the leadership in the five Pakatan Rakyat-led states to declare 16 Sept a public holiday.

Yesterday, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng announced that the state would declare it a holiday, but only from next year onwards.

Meanwhile in KOTA KINABALU, United Pasok Momogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) president Tan Sri Bernard Dompok said the party supports the proposal to declare 16 Sept a public holiday to commemorate Malaysia’s formation.

Dompok, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said the matter had been raised in the Cabinet, but no decision was made then.

"Perhaps, it’s time for the federal government to revisit this matter," he told reporters after attending a meeting with staff of federal government  departments and statutory bodies at the Federal Administrative Complex, Likas, near here today. – Bernama
