Khairy gets two more nominations

October 31, 2008

KUALA LUMPUR, 31 Oct 2008: Rembau Member of Parliament (MP) and Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin, who is contesting the top Youth post, obtained two more nominations today.

They were from Pasir Puteh and Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, bringing his total nominations so far to 47.

Former Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo, who was the third candidate to qualify for the contest, has bagged 48 nominations including from  Gua Musang, after its delegates meeting held on 23 Oct was deemed valid.

The meeting on that day nominated Khir Toyo while the second, held on 25 Oct, picked Khairy. The results of the second meeting no longer count.

Jerlun MP and Umno Youth executive committee member Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir is leading the nominations race with 66 divisions favouring him so far.

For the deputy chief’s post, Muar MP Razali Ibrahim so far has garnered 81 nominations while his closest rival Umno Youth exco member Datuk Reezal Merican Naina Merican has 68.

Others in the fray are way off the 20 nominations cut off mark to be eligible to contest the deputy chief post.

Thus far, 162 of the 191 divisions have held their delegates meetings while the others have until 9 Nov. Umno’s polls are scheduled for March next year.— Bernama
