Manikavasagam quits Selangor PKR post

December 31, 2008

PETALING JAYA, 31 Dec 2008: Kapar Member of Parliament (MP) S Manikavasagam today resigned with immediate effect as Selangor Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy liaison chairperson citing disappointment over certain Selangor leaders for neglecting the people’s needs.

He said his letter of resignation dated 31 Dec had been sent to Selangor Menteri Besar and Selangor PKR liaison chairperson Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim. A copy of the letter has been sent to PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

“I have had to take this conclusive decision after finding that certain leaders in the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) are arrogant and reluctant to hold discussions among themselves to resolve the problems (that have been) brought up,” he told reporters at a hotel here.

Asked about his position as a member of the PKR supreme council, Manikavasagam said he would make a decision on that after a meeting with PKR adviser and de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and former Hindraf chairperson P Waythamoorthy.

“My conclusive decision on whether to resign from the party will only be announced after I have held discussions with these two leaders,” he said.

Manikavasagam is expected to present a working paper on the problems of Indian Malaysians to Anwar on 15 Jan after he returns from attending the three-day 7th Barathiya Divas 2009 conference in Chennai, India.

Manikavasagam is scheduled to meet Waythamoorthy, who is abroad, on the sidelines of the Chennai conference.

“I am prepared to accept any decision by the party’s top leadership, including expulsion from the party,” he said.

Manikavasagam dismissed rumours that he would join MIC and replace Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu as party president, calling them baseless.

He stressed that if he was dismissed from PKR, he would not join any other political party despite having received invitations to do so, including from within the Barisan Nasional. — Bernama
