JOHOR BARU, 13 Sept 2008: Since embarking on a re-branding exercise the MIC, which suffered heavy losses in the 8 March general election, has succeeded in reviving 50 inactive branches and recruiting 8,000 new members.
Party president Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu estimated that in another two months more than 200 new branches will be opened around the country.
"Since the re-branding, various changes and renewals had been made in the party’s machinery management. We have changed the MIC’s political culture so that the party machinery is more effective and dynamic," he said.
The former Works Minister said this after launching the Johor state-level re-branding workshop here today.
Also present were party secretary-general Datuk Dr S Subramaniam, who is also Human Resources Minister, and senior party leaders.
Samy Vellu said efforts were also being made to register new members on-line with the party headquarters in a bid to increase membership.
As such, he hoped the MIC Youth and Wanita MIC in each state would recruit 25,000 and 10,000 new members respectively.
Presently, he said, there are 630,000 party members in 3,300 branches throughout the country.
Samy Vellu said after the re-branding exercise was over, the party will unveil a "MIC Roadmap" to enhance the commitment of branch chairmen as well as to enhance their political awareness in regard to the Indian community. – Bernama
