IPOH, 7 May 2009: Police today detained several individuals including members of parliament and party supporters for attempting to assemble outside the Perak Darul Ridzuan building, the venue for the state assembly sitting.
They were arrested between 8am and 9.30am for refusing to disperse when ordered to do so by the police and were later taken to the Ipoh district police headquarters.
Ipoh OCPD Azisman Alias confirmed the arrests but declined to give the number. Among those arrested were state assemblyperson for Teratai Jenice Lee and members of parliament Zuraida Kamaruddin (PKR-Ampang), Dr D Jeyakumar (PSM-Sungai Siput) and Mujahid Yusof Rawa (PAS-Parit Buntar).
Police had ealier issued a warning to the people not to be within a 500m radius of the building.
A police helicopter hovered above to monitor the situation.
