KUALA LUMPUR, 17 Dec 2008: Umno Youth executive council member Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir has expressed support to the call to revive the construction of a new bridge connecting Johor and Singapore.
Mukhriz said with the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex moved to the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar, traffic congestion in Johor Baru would become inevitable as the Johor Causeway, which was built in 1923, could no longer accommodate the tens of thousands of vehicles passing through the CIQ complex daily.
“This should be done immediately so that the traffic congestion in Johor Baru can be tackled before it causes other problems such as slowing down the state and country’s economic growth,” he said in his blog “Mukhriz.com”.
Mukhiz, who is Jerlun member of parliament, was commenting on the proposal by Johor Umno Youth information chief, Khalid Mohamad, that the government revive the construction of a new bridge to replace the Johor Causeway.
The project was scrapped 2006. — Bernama
