PUTRAJAYA, 2 Nov 2008: New fares for buses and taxis would be announced early next year, Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Minister Datuk Noh Omar said today.
While ensuring that the new fares would not burden the majority of users, he said the government would also give equal consideration to public transport operators.
“While the government does not wish to see the closure of any public transport company, I have been informed by the Small-Medium Enterprises Bank Bhd (SME Bank) that many bus companies are currently facing difficulties in settling their debts,” he added.
Noh was speaking to reporters after officiating the ministry’s Family Day here today.
On a related matter, he said bus and taxi fares would not be increased by 100%.
Meanwhile, the minister reiterated that 1,000 individual taxi permits would be issued at the end of the month. — Bernama
